The customer contacted me and wanted to landscape their property which was mostly bare and consisted of a few trees, and some overgrown shrubs. They also had some drainage issues at the side of the property which is a common issue.

Their wishlist included to completely get rid of all of the lawn, remove the overgrown shrubs and invasive plants, create a patio for a few lounging chairs, create pathways for the high traffic areas, and add native pollinator attracting plants.

The New Design

The new frontyard garden design elimited all of the front lawn. A rain garden was designed for half of the garden, which addressed the drainage issues between the two properties. The other half of the frontyard was located over a geothermal system, so a perennial pollinator garden was designed.

Even though the backyard is not very large, we divded the backyard into several spaces. The trellis breaks up the space and provides a backdrop to the main garden. A native honeysuckle vine will be trained to grow on it over the next couple of years. The circular hardscape patio allows enough room for a few Adirondack chairs and a fire pit for cozy evenings under the stars. The arborvitae behind the patio will provide some winter interest, a windbreak, and some privacy. The pathway connects the path to and from the driveway, backdoor, garage door, and shed doors.

We removed invasive species present on the property and installed many native shrubs and perennials. The garden will fill in within a few years for a lush shady garden. The hidden areas behind the garage and shed were cleared of invasive honeysuckle and wintercreeper. Pea gravel allows some extra storage for the family and will reduce maintenance. A mulch ring of transplanted hosta and native ferns was added around the big silver maple. We call this the bicycle garden! Can you guess why?
