Took a hike with the KY Native Plant Society this weekend to the Pine Barrens in the Shepherdsville area. It was a neat place, different than other places I've hiked. And, we saw very little invasives- only noticed 1 invasive honeysuckle shrub. The area is protected by the Nature Conservancy, even though some parts with very special plants were 4wheeled on... The drive to get there wasn't the easiest, but a nice place to hike.
This week is Tree Week in Lexington! One of today's events was a conifer tree walk in the Lexington Cemetery with our host, botanist Rob Paratley from UK. The cementery is a great place to see and learn about trees in general. Most of the trees are really mature specimens and sometimes they look different in older age. My favorite was this bald cypress growing in the pond. #lexingtontreeweek #lexingtoncemetery #baldcypress #lexingtonkytrees #treeslexington
There are a lot of different species of asters. Some are common to see in gardens, some common to see in naturalized areas, and some rare. They can be hard to identify. This one was sold to me as 'blue wood aster' from a local nursery. However it definitely isn't, and I think it's Shorts Aster. #aster #nativeaster #fallnativeplantgarden #fallgarden #shortsaster
